A line follower
is a basic model and is a good starting model for the MINDSTORMS
beginner. This is constructed using the first generation MINDSTORMS
robotics system known as the Robotics Invention System (RIS). The
current MINDSTORMS system is NXT 2.0.
This robot uses a
pair of light sensors to detect differences in reflected light from
a surface (in this case, to follow a black line). Depending on what
the sensors detect control the power and the direction of the drive
motors.
On curves, the
inner wheel coasts while the outer wheel drives the robot around the
curve and it slows down the outer wheel motor. On straights both
motors run and run at higher power for faster movement.
